Phi Graphic Design Contest Results
Contest judging
As a variety of different approaches were taken in the contest entries,
the following factors became the most important in selecting a winner:
- While the entries ranged from beautifully artistic to brilliantly
and subtly mathematical in their embodiment of phi, clearly
communicating the broad concepts and application of phi to the
uninformed viewer was the single most important factor.
- Extra merit was given for images that were clearly designed in
response to the goals of the contest rather than submitting previously
existing images that while interesting were not specifically or directly
related to phi.
- Creativity and artistry, both in concept and in execution were
important.
Thanks go to all the contest participants for their creativity and
initiative in sharing their view of phi with the world.

In this image I've tried not only to give examples of
phi - a nautilus spiral, a human face, the pyramids, etc. - but I've
also tried to describe it through the use of quotes and it's numerical
representation. Furthermore, I laid out the page according to the
Divine Proportion. If you look closely you can see the faint gridlines
I used, and each of the major centers of focus within this image
either fall within or directly on these lines. Consequently, this
image not only describes Phi, it embodies it as well, and I used tones
of yellow and gold throughout the piece to emphasize this point. |

20 steps around the globe
A Land-Art Project by Jo Niemeyer
Literally skirting the earth full circle, Jo Niemeyer's land-art
project comprises 20 stainless-steel pillars being implanted at
precisely computed locations in different countries on various
continents. Distances between them and their exact alignment have been
determined on the basis of the earth's circumference by breaking the
full course down, systematically and dynamically, into 20 increments
growing by virtue of logarithmic progression, so that even though the
scale is all the while retained the line-up finally reaches a total
stretch of 40023 kilometers, thus ,,circumnavigating" the globe. The
key to the idea is the golden section whose mathematical formula (1/2
√5-1/2 = 0,6180339...) has for long embodied the very essence of
harmony and aesthetics in the fine arts and the sciences. Ropinsalmi
in the Arctic north of Europe was laid down as the project's vantage
point whence its route will at first venture out on a so-called major
circle in a north-easterly direction to extend through Sweden,
Finland, Norway, then through Siberia, Central Asia, Australia and,
finally, to return to Lapland via Antarctica. Eugen Gomringer once
posed the rhetorical question: ,,isn't it appropriate for tangible art
to take on the task of reminding us of that proportionality which
obtains in the world and here on earth?". This is exactly what Jo
Niemeyer is trying to do - with the superior elegance of sheer
simplicity...
